  • Must offer product protection, wrapping versatility, and equipment runnability equivalent to that of plastic
  • Doesn't have to be transparent because with e-commerce, consumers believe in what they can see in images, but should be printed in natural colors
  • Should be recyclable versus compostable to align with consumer preferences
  • Should not be subject to restrictions concerning the use of plastic as anticipated by the European Union in 2018

What Are The Alternatives?

Identifying sustainable materials that meet these requirements definitely narrows the field of available options. Current frontrunners worthy of further evaluation include:

  • Virgin fiber paper
  • Recycled fiber paper
  • Biodegradable post-consumer bio-plastic that can be considered as organic waste
  • Wrapping material that can be immediately reused in the pulper, eliminating plastic waste
